Butterflies in the Classroom

Seeing caterpillars grow, form a chrysalis, and hatch into a butterfly, is a memorable and exciting event for any child.  And watching the life-cycle of the butterfly in real life brings excitement and awe and wonder to the classroom!

It's a very simple process to get some butterflies hatching in your classroom, and the whole process takes 3-4 weeks from when your caterpillars are delivered.

What Happens

Your Butterfly Garden, or Class Butterfly Kit, is delivered to you.  Keep the net and feeding dish safely for later (stage 6)

Use the voucher in the pack to order your pot(s) of caterpillars, and specify the date that you want them delivered.  Caterpillars are dispatched from mid-February until early September, on Tuesdays and Fridays.  There is a small delivery cost of £2.99 for the caterpillars.

Your caterpillars are delivered to you on the chosen date.  Your caterpillars come in a sealed tub, so there's no need to handle them!

Watch the caterpillars get bigger and bigger each day, as they eat the food that comes in the bottom of the tub

Eventually, the caterpillars will climb to the top of the tub, and form a chrysalis on the lid of the tub

Once all the caterpillars have turned to chrysalises, remove the lid, and hang it in your net (which comes with your kit).

You can feed your butterflies using the dish provided - simply add a bit of sugar to some water, and add to the dish.  Don't worry - full instructions are provided!

After a few days, your caterpillars will emerge as beautiful, Painted Lady butterflies!  Don't be alarmed if there's some red colouring at this point.  It might look like blood, but is simply a waste product as your butterflies emerge!

Once you've studied the butterflies in the classroom for a few days, go outside (to a garden area if possible), and celebrate the release of your butterflies into the wild!
